An extraterrestrial visits Haven's Realm!

Several of my readers have asked for more information about my Community - everything from how to become a vampire to the myriad intricacies of Haven's unique society. Believe it or not, the curious will approach me at book signings and ask such things as, "Are vampires real?", "Do you know any vampires?", and (my personal favorite), "Are you a vampire?" All righty, then! But as I considered the questions, I wondered how one might explain vampirism to someone who had never heard of vampires? What would that person's reaction be if he, or she, has no predetermined expectations or prejudices? I feel certain, with all the popularity these misunderstood beings have enjoyed lately, that everyone on this planet has at least heard of them. So I decided to look elsewhere for my female role, and who better than the femme fatale from my first work, Lost Hopes?

The original story was so far removed from what I'd developed in Treacherous Destiny, and so utterly worthless in form and content, that I discarded all but the most basic elements. My extraterrestrial, Ki'ara, is an empress from a planet I call Bricia. Her character hasn't changed significantly over time, though her inner termoil is much improved. The vampire for this story, Colton Graves, was originally too much like Barnabus Collins of Dark Shadows fame in both manner and history, so this definitely needed changing. I pulled them both out of mothballs, explained the culture they were about to explore, and once again, the story took off on its own. Still, the original version of The Darker Path proved to be my weakest story, and I've worked hard to bring better introspect, detail, and passion to this important tale as I prepare it for relaunch.

Ki'ara is the last of her line - a family that has ruled her planet in peace for hundreds of generations. The Brician people are a highly developed and peaceful people with extraordinary mental capacity and talent. Ki'ara contains within herself powers she is only beginning to awaken to, and these powers will prove crucial to her survival and the success of her impromtu mission.

As a condition of her ascension, she must select a mate from the list of suitors her father has presented to her. One of her primary responsibilities is to produce enough heirs to strengthen the diminished royal family line and ensure continued peace between the provinces of her world. Her problem? She doesn't like any of the men her father sent to her. She accepts her crown and is preparing reluctantly to announce her choice when an unusual storm appears with a vortex unlike anything she had ever seen. She allows it to take her, not knowing where it will lead but certain that her father's path is the wrong one to follow.

Colton resides north of Stone Ridge, an old colonial town in Massachusetts, in the same home he was born in nearly three hundred years ago. He was brought across against his will and without understanding by the same vampire who slew his brother. He hates what he has become, loathes feeding so much that he puts it off until the dark hunger overrides his reason. His bitterness and inner rage is heightened by the fact that he cannot separate or control his passions. Yeah, admittedly still a little Barnabus Collins-y, but I suppose every reluctant vampire would behave the same way. Once his history was his own, and no mention of witches or spiteful ghosts remained, I saw the character much more clearly.

While they fight against the inexplicable attraction that quickly forms between them, Ki'ara struggles to reconcile her responsibility to the Realm with her desire for this off-worlder. How was she brought here? By who? Why? Why does Colton appear to be her soul-mate, when no Brician has ever successfully mated outside their own species? Her search for answers leads her into the arms of the Community, where the denizens of Haven give her a true glimpse of what a vampire can be and at least some of the answers she seeks.

Yes, she ends up a guest of Haven, and those who are knowledgeable know that's not an easy thing for a mortal to do without falling under their control. While there, she saves the life of a valued Community citizen, communes with Council members, and attempts aid to Jason, who is still in a coma and suffering greatly. I didn't realize the true impact of her visit until near the end of Dragon Lord, but that's another story. And while I hadn't planned to bring Colton and Kiara back to Haven's Realm after this novel, I've caught glympses of them in further interaction with my vampire family, and suspect the reason will surface when that story comes to light.

Although this is a stand-alone novel by it's own right, it does bring back some of the characters my readers seem to love so well - Vincent, Joshua, Catherine, Antonia, and who could ever forget Trey? The Council of Elders thanks you all for your time, and I thank you for your interest..
